Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology, 23rd Edition (LANGE Basic Science) Review

I used earlier editions of Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology in the 1970's in graduate school, in veterinary school, and later for specialty certification. Up through the 22nd edition, I found this book to be a concise wealth of knowledge.

With the 23rd edition, I learned of the loss of Dr. Ganong, and after reading a few chapters in the book, highlighted what a great loss we have experienced.

Specifically, I waited for this edition to compile the latest information on the coagulation cascade, mechanisms of clotting, and the "newer" information regarding the extrinsic and intrinsic arms of the coagulation cascade. There was nothing new.

I pulled out my 22nd edition, and found the 23rd edition to almost be a verbatim repeat of the 22nd. I say almost, not because there was content added, but because the editors had deleted blocks of medical physiology and common medical pathological variations.

I checked out two other chapters, and gave up.

Checking the references in the chapters of the 23rd edition reveals scarcely any references that weren't in the 22nd edition. The 22nd edition has more references!

This textbook should be re-titled, "Review of Physiology". The medical aspect is gone. Dr. Ganong is gone.

Unfortunately I have put to rest this textbook.
