This book seems to have been overlooked in the rush to understand Islam in the aftermath of 9-11.I recommend it because it provides two reasoned case studies on how two different states, Malaysia and Pakistan, used the intensity of Islam to legitimize their governments and states.In the end, both had to control their fanatics.Well documented, with good notes and bibliography, this book is the first in a new series from Oxford on Religion and Global Politics. It is a very fine first start, and in the aftermath of 9-11, I would suggest to the editors of the series that they dramatically accelerate their other endeavors--at least three more books are needed on Islam in relation to state politics, in relation to political economy, and in relation to neighborhood or ethnic politics; and several others on the relationship of Judaism and Catholicism and Mormonism to state structures. A special emphasis on religious education and how this affects political perceptions would be helpful.This is a thoughtful book and one that should be part of the broader reading on Islam and global politics. This book utilizes interesting and detailed stories of well-known businesses, which emphasize the importance of giving a free rein to the creative energy of talented employees. Taffinder's advice is pragmatic and illustrated with interesting analyses and numerous examples. It covers a wide range of concepts and actions that are useful to any type of organization, and his use of "Action Lists" in most of the chapters provides the reader with important summary points. His use of lessons learned, as he describes the successes and failures of different organizations, provides the reader with a richer understanding of the concepts discussed. The author emphasizes the necessity for business leaders to constantly strive for perfection, appreciate the lack of permanence in the ways business is done, and acknowledge the constant vulnerability all companies face. Leaders need to consider what can be expected from the future, and consider competitive strategies; will a business be a "rule maker," a "rule taker," or a "rule breaker?" He discusses some of the personal psychological dimensions of transformational leaders, as well as the important leadership actions that are needed during the period of "big change." He emphasizes choosing the right team, uniting the team members, maintaining communications (which he feels is the essence of change), and keeping and supporting your change agents. I don't think it impossible to equal Virgil, Kalidasa, and Tasso." Michael Madhusudan Datta wrote this in a letter to a friend about his verse narrative, The Slaying of Meghanada (1861). The epic, a Bengali version of the Ramayana story in which Ravana, not Rama, is the hero, has become a classic of Indian literature. Datta lived in Bengal at the height of what is frequently called the Bengal Renaissance, a time so labeled for its reinvigoration and reconfiguration of the Hindu past and for the florescence of the literary arts. It was also a period when the Bengali city of Kolkata was a center of world trade-the second city of the British empire-and thus a site of cultural exchange between India and the West. Datta was the perfect embodiment of this time and place. The Slaying of Meghanada is deeply influenced by western epic tradition, and is sprinkled with nods to Homer, Milton, and Dante. Datta's deft intermingling of western and eastern literary traditions brought about a sea change in South Asian literature, and is generally considered to mark the dividing line between pre-modern and modern Bengali literature. Datta's masterpiece is now accessible to readers of English in Clinton Seely's elegant translation, which captures both the sense and the spirit of the original. The poem is supplemented by an extensive introduction, notes, and a glossary.

Datta's revisioning of the Ramayana is truly majestic. Sophisticated and subtle, shimmering and muscular, it deserves to be included in the Western contemporary global canon. I actually prefer it to the Illiad--to my mind, its equal in heroic gravitas. An appropriately lucid and rich introduction firmly grounds the reader in the matrix of the work's origins as well as its relevance for the contemporary reader of global literature. A timeless work of art.

ACCUPLACER Exam Flashcard Study System: ACCUPLACER Test Practice Questions & Review for the ACCUPLACER Exam Review

This line of test prep materials was recommended to me and is A+. At one hundred twenty pages, a very thorough review of all vital areas. I definitely feel prepared. Delivery was timely. The product is paperback, so much more convenient than shuffling through cards trying to keep things organized. The order of the material goes from basic to advanced. The first half (a little over half actually) is devoted to Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra\College Level Math and Math Practice, with the remaining half consisting of Reading Comprehension & Sentence Skills.

The Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills sections were very thorough and covered all necessary skills. Reading and writing skills have always come naturally to me, so I felt confident about this part. However, despite being proficient in these areas already, and needing less review, I found these sections extremely helpful!

The Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra section covers subjects such as fractions, formulas, equations, interest, decimal system, factoring, PEMDAS, simple and compound interest, rational, irrational and real numbers, ratios, proportion, the US Customary and Metric systems and many mathematical terms.

The College Level spanned subjects such as solving systems of equations, graphing, planes, college-level terms, distance, functions, properties and graphs of functions, theorems - geometry, trigonometry, and more are covered. Included a lot of material I had forgotten.

There is a good ratio of written questions/review in comparison to the Math Practice section which is multiple choice. Odd numbered pages contain flashcard work for all subjects, while even numbered pages give instruction, describing how to complete problem sets and giving answers to practice work. Overall, easy to understand, thorough and concise. I actually enjoyed completing the material!
