Galois' Dream: Group Theory and Differential Equations Review

Ever since Galois theory has been used to solve polynomial equations, people have been trying to use analogous techniques to solve differential equations. That's what the title alludes to.The book does not address what is known on the subject, however, and limits itself to Fuchsian differential equations which are historically important but not very general. The applications of group theory to this class is unlike the development of the subject to other ODEs.The audience for this book seems to change as the book progresses. The first two lectures seem to be aimed at non-math majors. It progressively requires abstract algebra, topology, and complex analysis. The proper audience is probably a beginning mathematics graduate student, but you wouldn't guess by seeing the elementary level of the first few chapters.For these students, though, I highly recommend it. General Relativity Review

The book presents a concise course on theory of gravity. In spite of its limited size of only 116 pages, it covers the main theoretical notions and experimental phenomena. The author does it in a quite instructive way emphasizing underlying physics. Particularly impressive in this respect are chapters on observable effects, spin interaction, gravitational waves and black holes. The book's comparative analysis of radiation of gravitational waves by ultrarelativistic particles versus synchrotron radiation serves, in my view, as a best example.

I enthusiastically recommend the book, both to students who have just started studying the field as well as to established researchers.

General Relativity: A Geometric Approach Review

I have taught electromagnetism at the advanced graduate level, and am reasonably familiar with classical differential geometry and general relativity (e.g. as presented by Weinberg). I am finding Ludvigsen's book a tough read, though a worthwhile one. A considerable amount both of the physics background and the mathematics background of the subject is omitted or treated very briefly. Three paragraphs cover the Coulomb potential *and* the plane wave, for instance. Definitions tend to be ostentive - by example.Ludvigsen's book has the virtues of brevity as well as its difficulties, however: the reader can see where he is going at all times, and the author takes the reader through the modern approach to differential geometry, and deeply into the results of relativity theory, quickly and efficiently.I hope to see a second edition of this book. A little more explanantion, here and there, would do much, if not to reduce the steepness of the learning curve, at least to provide a few handholds on the way up! A recurrence of this type of oversight should be avoidable when responsible parties, often government officials, appreciate the necessity of such integrated efforts. The book extols the virtues of cooperation between the earth, life and health sciences, as the most practical approach to better public health worldwide.
