I had this book as a student, so I have really _studied_ it. This book serves as a really great introduction to statistical inference theory. It is mathematically precise, yet accessible for students who are exposed to the topic for the first time. It contains a large number of carefully worked through examples, which makes the book suitable for self-studies. Self-studies are also made easier by the fact that all exercises have worked through solutions. Concepts that many students find difficult when seeing it for the first time (e.g. Neyman-Pearson test theory) are explained mathematically and with a number of illustrations, making it easier to really grasp the fundamental underpinnings of them. All in all I highly recommend this book - both for teaching the topic and for self-studies.

I was most impressed with this book. Having spent a career as a Financial Planner and Investment Advisor, I was particularly impressed with the global perspective of the author. I also taught Strategic Management for 20 years, and the authors have very correctly captured the idea that the old paradigms of the past just cannot work, and that a global approach is pretty much necessary if you want to see significant growth of investments. This is not your typical hedge fund book. This book doesn't emphasize risky investments. Nor does it talk about investing in derivatives. Instead, it is talking about, quite literally, hedging against down markets and putting your investment dollars into places where there is positive growth even amid this economic crisis.

I was also impressed with the number of resources the authors provided. With the age of the internet, the authors have effectively put all the tools anInvestor's Passport to Hedge Fund Profits: Unique Investment Strategies for Today's Global Capital Markets (Wiley Trading) investor might need in a nice, neat format, equiped with URLs and other very useful information. Despite my years in the business, I still learned a few things!

The books reads well and intellilgently. It is logical, concise, and offers many examples. I found this book very worth reading as a professional. If a non professional were to read this book, I have no doubt it would lead them toward a path of increased investment profits. I must admit, I was surprised at how well it flowed for a topic that is not the easiest to understand. The authors broke down the components of investing so well that readers of any experience in the markets would probably benefit. Very well done...a real A+ for the authors. Highly timely and relevant to today's economic situation.

IPv6 Network Programming Review

I received this book today, and within three minutes of looking it over, had decided to return it. The book contains 361 pages, but 281 of those pages are RFCs and other documents freely available online. The actual original content of the book is all of 80 pages.

From a quick scan, the content looks like it's reasonably detailed and useful, and contains a fair bit of source code, which can certainly be helpful. The code was written (and presumably tested) using BSD, but there is some mention of other operating systems. However, I found no mention of AIX or HP-UX, and the numerous flavours of Linux are treated as a single operating system. Does IPv6 behave exactly the same on SuSE, RedHat, Ubuntu, Knoppix, Slackware, and all the rest? I don't know, but I would have expected this book to tell me, at least about the major ones.

I'm giving this book only 2 stars because almost 80% of the book was not written by the author, and is available for free online. I expect a lot more than 80 original pages from a $50 book.

This extremely readable and sympathetic description of Japanese lifestyles really rings true to me (and I've lived in Japan for over 20 years). The author, who I understand majored in Japanese at a Japanese university, who speaks Japanese fluently, and who even reads Japanese (all three alphabets), has lived in Japan 25 years, so it's not surprising that knows her subject thoroughly, but she also writes about it persuasively and with insight. I stayed up all night reading this book, and I'm giving copies to friends for Christmas!

China and the Chinese
Jewish Wayfarers is a collection of concise biographies of people whose background was Jewish and who spent time in China during the twentieth century. The choice is quite varied and shows a great range of different persons.
The book was originally written in German as a more academic text of greater length. The present book is a shorter translation. Perhaps the translation is sufficiently good that one does not notice the German source, as this fact is not mentioned in other reviews.
One of the problems for people in Central Europe is how to talk about the Jewish people after the long history of Jews in Europe, for example, the Dreyfus affair, the Zionist movement, the Holocaust, the founding of Israel, the Munich Olympics, etc. Political correctness tends to limit what people feel they can say about the Jews, and this has a certain distorting effect on understanding and discourse.
In this collection, I believe, the author makes a contribution to normalizing the Jewish people. They are not all stereotypical idealized types placed on a pedestal. They are different sorts of people of all different types. Many are very admirable for their value choices. Some are in the medical profession, and go to China to help people. Others are artists, writers, journalists, composers, or intellectuals and are interested in Chinese culture and Chinese people and wish to portray the country for Westerners. Some are businessmen, capitalists in pre-communist China. Others are committed Marxists. Some of these become disillusioned later, others are true believers and never reject communism, even though they spend years in Chinese prison. One man, Trebitsch-Lincoln is a religious impostor and rogue. Not admirable at all. So we have a wide range of different types, some we admire, some we do not. This is what we find when examining other groups, such as Christians and humanists. We treat them as individually different and capable of responsibility, and do not try to excuse the less admirable types by supposing that the whole group lacks the ability for responsibility.
This normalization of the Jewish people using the example of visitors to China is I think the "message" of the book. However, it is not so much a "message" book as an interesting panorama of different lives. I myself have never been able to read book-length biographies, so I find the format of collecting many short biographies very desirable, the author does not dwell too long on the details of any one life, but keeps the interest up by going from type to type and life to life.
