It is useful as a broad starting point for individuals (like me, upon first reading it) unfamiliar with the many international agreements relevant to the global trade in medicine. (A broad understanding of intellectual property law--for instance knowing generally what patents and trademarks are--is helpful in reading this, but AMGE provides a brief overview of IP law generally for those without any starting knowledge.) Moreover, for individuals already familiar with the legal issues, AMGE delves into the policy implications and outcomes of contrasting perspectives regarding intellectual property rights and medicine. AMGE goes beyond the generalized maximalist vs. minimalist perspectives and explores in depth the international agreements and domestic actions that reflect the dominant, contrasting approaches to managing intellectual property rights in medicine.
