Product Description

For many therapists it has replaced previous action terms such as acting in and acting out. Something new has been captured by this concept: a recognition of a process that may involve words but goes beyond words. For some, enactment addresses a continuous undercurrent in the interaction between patient and therapist in the realm of intersubjectivity. Others ask whether this concept adds either clarity or a new perspective to the clinical situation. This volume addresses the questions: Does the current focus on enactments entail a shift in our model of therapeutic change? Are enactments essential? Can they be dangerous, and if so, under what circumstances? Enactment is essential reading for all psychotherapists.

Enactment: Toward a New Approach to the Therapeutic Relationship (Library of Clinical Psychoanalysis) Review

'Enactment' is a most important concept, not only for contemporary psychoanalytic clinic, but also for understanding many problems we are facing today. Since it brings a new meaning to the old idea of acting-out, a well known and rather criticized concept of action within the analyic setting, many odd actions, even bizarre and criminal behavior may be understood under a new light. "Enactmens" may show what subjects are not able to realize. The text is well written, and the editor made a good selection. The reason why I've rated it with four stars is due to the fact that the authors ignore some of the most important psychoanalists in USA, namely, Robert Stolorow and George Atwood, 'stars' of 'Amazon's' team of writters, who have discussed the concept in their book "Structures of Subjectivity", published in 1984. 'Enactment' is there, thourougly explained, and part of a wide and deep discussion of Intersubjectivity. Could this omission be due to some kind of "I don't talk about those who are not part of my club' attitude? If it's so, this would be a poor scientific attitude, or, at least, an expressive form of cultural enactment.
