Few Americans are not involved in sports, either as active participants or passive observers. There is no question that sports have a genuine and lasting impact on American culture. For those participants and observers interested and motivated enough to ask about this impact, and the processes of same, this book is a gem. Soccer mom wondering about the dynamics of sport for your kid? Serious amateur participant in a sport wondering about the connection of one's identity to that sport? Armchair professional sports fan wondering about the culture of the champion athletes? It's here.

This is, to be sure, a fairly heavy tome generated for academic use. The book is divided into collections of pieces by scholarly authors, each collection addressing a content area (early experiences; experience and identity; deep in the experience; transition experiences). There are discussion questions and recommended readings at the end of each content area collection. Some of the pieces are fairly dry. My favorite, about identity construction among rock climbers, hit home, as I truck with many who practice that endeavor.

At a fairly high price, not many readers will likely buy this book (sorry, Amazon). However, this is an excellent checkout from the library. You probably won't read through the whole thing. But within, you will find a piece or two that will broaden your horizon and deepen your thinking about that major element of American society that is sports.
